Sculpture in Progress

Ahead of her first major solo exhibition Repetition is a Form of Change (September 19 - October 20, 2024) German-New Zealand artist Sophie Rowley will join the third edition of Looiersgracht 60’s Public Research Residency programme – an initiative that supports artists and cultural practitioners with resources and presentation opportunities. The artist will expand on her existing project throughout her residency, utilising the space as her canvas to create a site-specific installation and limited-edition works for her upcoming show. During this period, Rowley will share her creative process with the public through two engaging events. Guests are invited to attend and engage with the artist and her works before their completion.

During her residency, Sophie Rowley will initiate the construction of a large, site-specific sculpture, following extensive testing in her Berlin studio. This 'open studio' event offers visitors the rare opportunity to observe the artist in action as she meticulously weaves a three-dimensional web through choreographed, repetitive movements using fine string—an installation that will serve as a centrepiece in her upcoming solo exhibition Repetition is a Form of Change at Looiersgracht 60.

Throughout the event, Rowley will actively experiment with the colours of the poles, the placement of threads, and the overall spatial dynamics, allowing the sculpture to engage in a dialogue with its surroundings. Additionally, she will discuss her concepts, materials, and techniques while working, offering deeper insights into her experimentation and the process behind her work. Attendees are invited to actively participate in the making process of this installation as it unfolds in real time, as well as explore her working models and process materials.

This open studio event begins at 16:00 on September 8, 2024, followed by a Q&A session with the audience and concluding with drinks. The programme is free of charge, but spaces are limited, so please reserve your seat by emailing info@looiersgracht60.org.
